Landmark Weather Coverage Contract for Outdoor Festival Conducted in Belgium

April 23 2009

WeatherBill Press Release

WeatherBill announced today a groundbreaking weather coverage contract purchased by Antwerpen Proeft (Taste of Antwerp, www.antwerpenproeft.be), Belgium’s largest outdoor culinary festival.

The National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration has just announced its prediction for the 2006 hurricane season Taste of Antwerp, in its third year, will take place August 21-23, 2009 during the Bollekesfeest. Taste of Antwerp turns the city into a gigantic open-air restaurant, and this year is set to be bigger than ever. More than 25 renowned chefs and caterers are registered to attend; bringing thousands of visitors to taste their small plates in Vlaamse  Kaai aka Gedempte Zuiderdokken, Antwerp's biggest square. Taste of Antwerp is at the top of summer tourist agendas in Antwerp during the end of August.

WeatherBill is supplying weather coverage for the festival that will pay Antwerpen Proeft if it rains more than 9.7mm per day during the event dates. Rainfall is measured at the official weather station in
Antwerp Deurne.

Attendees purchase food tickets when they arrive at the event. They don’t book in advance or pay an entry fee, so we rely on high turnout which could be negatively affected by rain,” explains Ward Ramaekers, the festival’s organizer, along with Claudia Engelen. “This year the festival has grown considerably in size, both in terms of venue and expected attendance. The weather in Belgium is notoriously unpredictable, and coupled with our accountability to bring in attendees, it made event weather coverage imperative."

“Too much rain can heavily affect the event’s revenue,” says Jens Boening, Managing Director of WeatherBill UK Limited. “WeatherBill offers the only weather coverage that can be customized
online or over the phone to protect event revenue when rain, snow, excess cold or heat lowers admission, parking, concession, and merchandise revenue. Payment is based on weather data, so there is no claims process and payment takes place automatically if bad weather happens.” (full release)

The tourism agency has promised to pay clients $500 if more than 1.25 centimetres of rain fell in a single day in Victoria during April and May." (full article)

Umbrella Policies

from Texas Meetings + Events

"Getting paid out on these [event insurance] policies, however, can require the event host to prove losses. As a result, some of this kind of insurance has become highly specialized to help purchasers be more assured of the kind of coverage they are buying."

"For example, the San Francisco-based WeatherBill sells weather protection that can be used to insure meetings and events ranging from company concerts to country fairs. According to WeatherBill's Director of Sales, Justin Brennan, 'Weather is the trigger, it is not the scope of the event or the loss of revenues; it is purely weather-based.'"

How Will Agribusiness Weather a Storm?

March 2 2009

from The Public Ledger

"The platform has also showed that weather derivatives are not just for those that can stump up large amounts of capital. Previously a firm wanting to hedge $200,000 of risk where the premium would be in the $7,000 to $20,000 range would have found most risk capacity providers reluctant given the cost of the legal paperwork and so on. ButWeatherBill’s low cost model is suitable no matter how small the deal. 'We can charge ‘fair-value’ even for contracts that hedge risks as small as $100,' said Mr. Hamlin." (full article)
